That means cutting swales and ditches, establishing positive drainage away from structures, stabilizing outlets, and installing the silt fence and inlet protection a disturbed site needs while it is open.

On a residential property it usually starts as a complaint: standing water against the foundation, a lawn that will not dry out, topsoil moving down a slope every spring. On a commercial site it starts as a requirement, because any disturbance of an acre or more generally triggers an Ohio EPA construction stormwater permit and a sediment and erosion control plan.

Northern Ohio makes this harder than it needs to be. Lake-plain clay drains slowly, the ravines feeding the Rocky River, Black River, and Vermilion River cut fast when they are fed uncontrolled runoff, and lake-effect precipitation arrives in volume. A drainage plan that works in dry weather is not a drainage plan.

How the job actually runs

  1. Read the water

    We walk the site and work out where water enters, where it collects, and where it can legally and physically be sent. Guessing at this stage is what produces expensive rework.

  2. Cut the conveyance

    Swales, ditches, and regraded surfaces move runoff along a defined path instead of a random one, at a slope that carries water without scouring the channel.

  3. Stabilize the outlet

    Every discharge point gets treated. An unprotected outlet moves the erosion problem downstream rather than solving it, and that is often onto a neighbor.

  4. Protect during construction

    Silt fence, inlet protection, and stabilized construction entrances go in on active sites and stay maintained until the ground is established.
